Hello, All!

Just as a note re: our Heroes Teaching Circle stuff here….I think this may be some developing aspect of interest to us, so I thought I should send this little report:
I hosted the first Crimson Hawks’ FYEnglish Film (all of them based on the Hero’s Journey to fit in with class) on 9/11/08 from 5 to 7: 30….and about 80 students showed up!!  It was great!  We look at archetypes/stereotypes/sexism+ more! in Blue Crush, the women-as-champion-surfer-heroes movie.  As it turns out, I have a former professional surfer from Hawaii in my Women’s Studies class, who is coming to class to talk about all those issues as portrayed in the film.  He is totally into the hero’s journey thing, too, and so it should be a cool, connected discussion.
Next week, in our great new auditorium venue (Sprowls Aud, Thank Gawd), we will see Edge of America, another women-as-heroes-movie, and here’s an overview of it at this great new site I found:  http://WWW.teachwithmovies.org/guides/edge-of-America.HTML
This site is going to be really useful to us, I bet!  As a teaching aside, I learned from Judith that film is ultra-efficient tool to teach with.  It allows for a wide variety of opinion for everyone (because most students are experts at analyzing the moving image these days….notice that??). For instance, in my Women’s Studies 200 class (also attending), we have our trusty teacher-intern Emily, who strenously objects to the sexism she perceives in Blue Crush, as well as Judith (not attending but Always Present), who sees the movie as racist.  Emily is prepared to be The Destroyer in the class discussion on B/C, and Jack and Ron and I looking forward to that discussion!  It’s all good!  A diversity of opinion is…well, what we want, right?
As with Blue Crush, we hope to elicit a wide variety of reactions to the mythopoetics of Edge of America.
Invite everyone!
Where: Sprowls Auditorium (aka “McVittie Aud”…it’s the only one in Sprowls, which is the Art Blg.
When: This Wednesday, Sept 17
What Time:  5:00 to 7:30ish PM
Come on down!
